We are proud to introduce a new and original way to travel around Iceland. No longer must you spend the big bucks on car rentals as well as hotels – Kuku Campers!
What if we told you that you could combine the experience into one amazing vehicle, without the hassle of driving one of those huge motor homes around the narrow and curvy mountain roads of Iceland? You would probably think that we were crazy, right? Well sceptics step aside as we introduce you to Kúkú Campers!
Kúkú Campers puts an original spin on the way you can enjoy Iceland
By purchasing Renault Kangoo’s that had been sitting empty ever since the industrial workers started flocking off to Norway, modifying them and giving them a spectacular paint job. Kúkú Campers are able to provide a cheap and entertaining way to explore the Icelandic countryside.
Their office is located on Klapparstígur 30, in the heart of the down town area which sets you up for things to come by introducing you to the wonders of the down town area right off the bat. However, if you prefer to just drive off straight from the airport, you can arrange for a car to be waiting for you when you arrive, for a fee.
(If you do not like this style, you can refer to how to travel by Bus)
All of Kúkú Camper’s cars have been modified to feature a sleeping area in the back.
Two adult individuals can easily lay down and comfortably fall asleep. It’s a spacious cabin which even features a nice shelf for cooking supplies and other accessories. There’s a curtain that separates the front of the car from the sleeping area, meaning that no longer are you confined to the traditional camp sites. You can park this car anywhere you’d like and jump in the back for a few z’s.
Steinarr Lár, one of the company’s three owners, handles the modification of the cars, which are then decorated by 7berg, an Icelandic rapper/graffiti artist. Each car is painted differently and feature prominent celebrities that have recently risen to a certain “cult status”. Some of the heroes you can expect to find on the side of the car include Steven Seagal, Chuck Norris, David Hasselhoff and many others. Half the fun is finding out which car they pick out for you, which is an extra surprise from these guys.
We was lucky enough to receive the Chuck Norris car for our trip, and we must say, the artwork does make a difference. You feel powerful and full of life when you drive the cars. People notice you and envy you immensely. How’s that for a well deserved ego boost ahead of your journey? The cars are easy to drive, comfortable and above all, fun!
Kúkú Campers is owned by three energetic guys. There’s Steinarr Lár, a founder of Brettafélag Íslands (Icelandic boarding company), Valdimar Geir Halldórsson, owner of Nýlenduverslun Hemma og Valda, Reykjavík Backpackers and Akureyri Backpackers, and Hörður Ágústsson, the owner of Macland. There’s a lot of experience shared between these guys, and they make sure that you get what you want out of your stay in Iceland.
Another thing that Kúkú offers is the chance to rent some well needed accessories.
You can pretty much ask for anything, and as long as it fits either inside or on the side/on top of the car, they will do their best to service you. Do you want to play the guitar on the camp site? No problem, they’ve got an acoustic guitar for you. Want to ride the bicycle around the area, or even catch some surf action? You’re in luck, they rent those out as well, which should make your trip to and from the country that much easier without the extra luggage.
Kúkú Campers aim to make sure you get the most out of your trip.
They offer some interesting Kúkú maps that show you where you can go to explore certain aspects of Iceland. For instance, they offer the Honeymoon map for those looking for a romantic getaway. A Surfing map and even a Sex Outdoors map for those who are a bit more adventurous than others.
Adding to that, Kúkú even helps with signing you up for tours with other companies, making them essentially your one stop central for the dream vacation.
We enjoyed our experience with Kúkú, and proudly give them our seal of approval! Steinarr Lár sums up the experience quite well with a single phrase:
“Travelling with Kúkú is a state of mind. It’s total freedom at a low price. Do what you want, where you want, when you want!”
