1. Svartur á Leik (Black’s Game)
A great film that depicts the cruelty of the underground world in Iceland. The film recounts to the tale of this change through the anecdotal group of pushers that assumed responsibility for Iceland’s underworld. Official Trailer
2. Órói (Jitters)
A movie about young people who struggle to find themselves in today’s society. This is an elegantly composed film that catches the disarray and energy of being a youngster, with an appealing troupe cast. The film pursues the lives of a few youngsters and the difficulties they face, specifically with their folks/gatekeepers.
3. Djúpið (The Deep)
The heroic tale of a fisherman that has to swim 3 miles in the freezing North Atlantic Ocean when his ship capsizes. This shows one mans survival against the odds beautifully.
4. Nói Albinói
A tale of a young man in the lonely village of Flateyri
5. Sódóma Reykjavík (Remote Control)
A comedy featuring a trio of wannabe mobsters, small time crooks and a man on a quest to find a new remote for his mother’s TV.
6. Djöflaeyjan (Devil’s Island)
Set in the time shortly after the war. People lived in houses previously occupied by the American army, so called “Braggahús”, long and oval shaped houses. Rock and Roll was getting popular and the youth culture that follows that trend. Follows the lives of the different generations as they struggle to cope with this change.
7. Nýtt líf (New life)
2 luckless friends struggle to make ends meet, so they decide to make their way to the Westman Islands and work fish
8. Reykjavík Rotterdam
An ex smuggler has to do one last job in order to save his brother in law’s skin. This movie has recently been remade for the American market under the name Contraband starring Mark Wahlberg.
9. Stella í Orlofi (Stella on holiday)
A woman decides to help her husband, when he falls out the window and breaks a few bones, by going on a fishing trip he had planned with a client. Only problem is, she takes the wrong person..
10. Children of Nature (1991)
This straight to the point and enchanting story of seniority and love of the wide open has many echoes with Rams, however here the story takes on a practically mythic status, bringing up issues about what worth longer life has when you desert everything that has an importance for you. Offspring of Nature is additionally striking in that it is the main Icelandic film to date to have been named for the best outside film Academy Award (Baltasar Kormákur’s The Deep approached in 2012, making it to the extent the January waitlist).
