Is it hard to get a Vietnam Visa online?
The answer is NO, in fact it is easier than you think.
During my run in south East Asia, I thought of visiting Vietnam for a month and started my research accordingly. Just like any other tourist I started looking for the visa options to enter Vietnam. The first thing which I did was to check my eligibility for an online visa to enter Vietnam. Surprisingly, nationalities of many countries are eligible for getting a visa online. Still, it is suggested to double check the eligibility of your nationality for getting an online Vietnamese visa before you proceed for buying it.
Once you are confirmed on your eligibility as I was, the next step is to find an “authorized agency” to help me in getting the visa. To promote the tourism, Vietnamese government grants permission to certain agencies which are authorized to provide “pre-approval” letters to those who wish to get a visa for entering Vietnam. Consider this letter as an approval of your entrance in Vietnam, and a copy of the same is required to be submitted when you are at Vietnamese immigration for getting visa stamped on your passport.
While looking for an authorized agency, you may encounter with horror stories where people get in contact with a random agency, which took their money and never provided any letter to them. These cases only happen when people do not spend any time on checking the authenticity of the agency. To avoid any incident like that, I took a dive into reviews on such agencies, read few blogs and looked for recommendations about an authorized one. My search ended when I found an authentic agency named Vietnamvisavoa, as their service was both reviewed and recommended by a good number of people.
Like others, even I found them professional, responsive and fair priced. Above all, they arranged for my 30 day visa which helped me in entering the Vietnam without any further effort.
What are the types of Vietnam visa are available online?
Vietnam offers a 30 days or 90 days visa to foreigners who intend to visit Vietnam for tourist or business purpose. Both the cases are available with a single entry and multiple entry option.
If you are a US passport holder, you are also eligible for getting a 1 year multiple entry visa. But note that, no foreigner is allowed to stay for more than 90 consecutive days in Vietnam. So even if you get a 1 year visa, you need to go out, re-enter Vietnam and continue being in the country for another 90 days.
While you are buying a visa, keep in mind that once you ask and get an approval letter for a single entry visa, you cannot convert it to multiple entry. In case, you have opted for a single entry visa, but later you realize a need go out of Vietnam and come back again, simply repeat the process and ask for a new multiple entry visa, once you are out Vietnam. Lastly, getting an extension on Vietnam visa is also possible but the process is expensive and complex and should be avoided if possible.
The cost you pay for Vietnam visa is dependent on type of entry, duration of stay and the urgency of visa. Here urgency means in how much time you need the visa. I was having enough time with me and also wanted to save some money, so I went with a 3 day delivery time. But if your urgency is high, you can get your pre-approval letter in two hours as well.

Getting a “Pre-approval” letter for Vietnam visa
In order to get my 30 day single visit Vietnam visa, I went to home page of Vietnamvisavoa and clicked on “Apply Online” button. Before going further, I ensured that the website is safe to provide details. I found it safe as a padlock in address bar confirmed the same.
The next step was to provide the following details as were required:
♦ Port of entry (I was entering in Vietnam via Ho Chi Minh, so SGN)
♦ Date of Arrival
♦ Visa Type
♦ Passport Details
♦ Email Address
♦ Service type (2 business days for me)
After providing the details, I paid 18USD for 30 day single entry visa with a credit card.
Even after selecting a 2 working days, I received my pre-approval letter for visa in around 24 hours. With that, I also received “Vietnamese visa application form” (consider it as an application form for immigration) and instructions for further steps which are as follow:
♦ Take a print of “Vietnamese visa application form” and “Pre-approval” letter.
♦ Submit the printouts with 2 passport sized photographs at the “Landing Visa Counter” at arrival port.
♦ Bring 25$ for the stamping fees (50$ for multiple entry)
After receiving the mail, I checked for correctness of details such as spelling of name, duration of stay etc. As I found no mistake there, I arranged for other requisites as directed, created a folder of them and waited for my travelling day.
To be on safe side, I also put a copy of my return ticket to showcase the proof of my return. This was not required but I did it for “just in case” purpose.
